How This Project Began: My Workflow

Every major embroidery project is a journey that requires careful planning before the first real stitch is even made. For this shirt, my process began by sourcing the perfect canvas – a beautifully tailored, ready-made linen shirt blank from Svoeridna. Once the physical shirt was in my hands, I selected the traditional Eastern Podolia pattern and carefully curated my thread colors to complement the natural tone of the linen. Because accuracy is everything with Zamkova Nyzynka, my next crucial step was marking the layout. Using a simple contrasting thread, I stitched guide lines directly onto the fabric to map out exactly where the embroidery panels would sit. With the boundaries clearly defined and the layout locked in, I finally put the linen into my hoop and began the rewarding process of embroidery.

🎨 The Technique & The Pattern

The pattern I am stitching is historical and authentic to Eastern Podolia. I purchased it directly from Lidiya Bebeshko Art through Facebook. Out of respect for the designer’s rigorous research and intellectual property rights, I cannot share the pattern chart or digital files here. However, I highly encourage you to support their incredible preservation work by purchasing the pattern yourself!

✂️ Materials & Process

The Shirt Blank: Svoeridna

The fabric is a beautiful Ukrainian linen. Instead of cutting and sewing a shirt from scratch, I am using a ready-made shirt blank from the modern Ukrainian brand Svoeridna.

Svoeridna specializes in producing pristine, beautifully constructed traditional-cut shirt blanks specifically designed for hand embroidery. Using their ready-made base allows me to focus 100% of my energy on the stitching, knowing the tailoring is already flawless.

The Thread Choice: Finding the Perfect Weight

Finding the exact weight of thread to balance out the tight linen weave took some trial and error:

• DMC Perle Cotton: I initially tested this because I wanted a highly defined, corded look. Unfortunately, it didn’t blend cleanly into the background weave and lacked the solid, blocky coverage required for this style.
• DMC Mouliné (6 Strands): Using the full thread straight out of the skein was far too heavy. It overstuffed the holes in the linen, distorted the fabric, and buried the crisp geometric lines.
• DMC Mouliné (4 Strands): The ultimate sweet spot. Stripping the floss down to exactly four strands allows the thread to pack together perfectly. It gives full, opaque coverage without stressing the linen fibers, making the geometric corners look incredibly sharp.

🔍 How Zamkova Nyzynka Is Done

Zamkova Nyzynka (Замкова низинка) is an ancient variation of the Nyzynka stitch family. What makes it fascinating—and incredibly challenging—is that it is traditionally worked entirely from the wrong (reverse) side of the fabric!

It is a counted-thread darning technique where the needle weaves over and under a precise count of threads. The “zamkova” (locked) element means the stitches interlock securely, creating an unbelievably dense, heavily structured texture on the front of the garment that looks almost woven directly into the linen.
